Pros

TELUS' entrepreneurial environment allows for self directed career growh; work life balance is something that is promoted and exhibited by most senior managers. Because of a skew towards young professionals, culture is friendly, casual and dynamic.

Cons

Formal coaching, mentoring and development programs not a high-point. Although TELUS strives to hire the best and brightest, and manages to maintain a material base of consultancy experienced professionals, it does not pay consultant wages. Bonus program is somewhat generous on balance, however does not allow for pay for exceptional performance which results in laissez faire mediocre output at times.

Pros

Education assistance, great co-workers and opportunity to learn. I have been able to take courses to improve my skills and gain knowledge in a variety of areas. Opporutnity to work from home or participate in employee giving campaigns. Excellent social responsibility programs.

Cons

Work life balance is very poor, continual conflict between union and company. Upper management makes it very clear that you need to be putting in a minimum of 9 to 10 hours a day in order to succeed. No one should be sending emails in the middle of the night but that's the way to get ahead. Unrealisitic expectations from management on time management and work loads.

Pros

Good company overall; There is a great training program, all paid, and if you need to go out of town food and lodging is provided. You also receive good discounts on TELUS products, and a work cell phone as well as tools, a vehicle and credit cards. There is a good service technician sales recognition program, and while your manager may not recognize you, this program is more automatic and you will receive gifts and commission on all your sales. TELUS also has a good program for charities and you can often get your own charity as the option for your local group to donate too.

Cons

Temporary status, union based, deception in hiring practices, poor recognition, lack of employee trust (since managers are not in the union, they believe that you work for a different company). There are alot of benefits with TELUS but when your being hired they will tell you 6 to 9 months until you are able to attain permanent status and receive these benefits, unfortunately, the truth is the range is more from 10 month to 1 year, even if you ask and ask again; this is a very deceptive hiring practice (watch out if you have children and need those benefits for them, you will not get it right away!). While you can be recognized by your manager, generally they seeks faults and forget when you've achieved something. Get to know your manager, and DO NOT SET THE BAR TO HIGH, if you start out small, chances are you'll be better off then if you have experience. This is due to expectations being set upon you, ensure you stay at everyone else's level, unless you have a out-side-the-box manager you will not benefit from being better than anyone else. Employees are all tracked with GPS on their vehicles, and while you may be told it is not to track you...it is. They will record the data and it can come back to bite you if you don't take care to appear your doing something (even when you have nothing to do), best bet is to do your jobs and pull into a C.O. and read a book while waiting for more work.
