Pros

I started at TechSoup as a contractor and eventually converted to a full-time employee. I have been working for about 18 years and I can honestly say this is one of the best professional experiences I've ever had. The staff here truly cares about the work they are doing and using technology to make an impact. No vapid platitudes about "changing the world" -- just real dedication and action. There is ongoing dialogue about how to empower nonprofits and libraries with technology, provide free education and training, in addition to developing apps that can help local communities. It's a heartfelt place rooted in true activism.

Cons

I have none yet (thankfully)!

Pros

A good place to be for learning about NGO world Relatively better salary within the sector Good Benefits Good Colleagues Rapid growth in projects

Cons

No promotion, you can stay at the same position for long years Decisions change all the time and communication between top management and employees are so low, you always find out the changes on your projects at the last minute Not good senior managers, they can micromanage your work Evolves to business model in recent years, so the ngo environment has been destroyed

Pros

* Great work and mission, and truly creating incredible change in the world * Amazing people and fantastic work/life balance * Always growing and innovating (albeit slower than you would find at a for-profit) and has incredible reach and influence * If you work hard, there is some opportunity to move horizontally within the organization and find a range of experience

Cons

* No room for vertical advancement in the company unless you "make your own position" * Lack of professional development and many managers are not "people managers"
