Pros

Stability and Predictability of Work. Protecting society, upholding the laws of the State, working with victims of crime, seeking justice.

Cons

The challenge is the fast pace and tremendous case load with demanding deadlines and the constant multi-tasking which is required to be successful

Pros

The hours are great and flexible.

Cons

They do not know what they want you to do. Priority's change on a minute to minute basis. Politics on small level involved in department between coworkers. No wage increases unless state legislature approves one could be years before you get one. Expect you to work while your on vacation and on your weekend - seen data manager do it and then they do not even use data and no compensation for it. All new employees under 30 only a couple longevity people left!

Potential to be a great place to work, but falls very short of this

Pros

I had some great co-workers who were smart, personable, and possessed high-grade work ethics. Good managers and supervisors do exist within the State's employ, but they seem to be few and far between. Health benefits and time off pretty well rivaled anything offered in the private sector, at least when I first started working there.

Cons

Governor Haslam's TEAM Act pretty well eliminated any job security, which opened the door to malicious managers being able to bring trumped-up charges against employees they don't like and terminating them. Less security would be ok, but pay rates were still below market average, at least in my department. A bad manager can make an employee's life a living hell, and there's very little they can do to remedy this because the old grievance process was eliminated.
