Pros

37.5hr week. Great work life balance

Cons

If you aren't in the inner circle you won't get promoted. Many people in high ranking position that aren't qualified for the job.

Pros

Workstation management doesn’t care what you do as long as they don’t have to hear about it. Lots of paid time off.

Cons

They do not pay enough for you to afford rent if you live in Nashville. Benefits are on par with any large private sector employer (sometimes private sector is better) but pay is far, far below private sector pay. They dangled a “pay reclassification” in front of us for two years, but only the supervisors got reclassified. Do not expect to ever be allowed to take any classes in the IT Academy, that is another thing that will be dangled in front of you, but you will never be given time to do it. Total lack of direction from leadership. Constant confusion, miscommunication, or lack of communication from management.

If you need work experience...

Pros

A lot of positions do not require weekend work

Cons

The starting pay is below the poverty line regardless of work experience/education. There is also racial tension if called out, the person reporting this issue will be labeled as someone who is "difficult to work with" and get blackballed from all other State of Tennessee positions. There will be no pay for performance increases, so if you live in a major metropolitan area or in close proximity to one, you may have to take on an additional job to afford the cost of living.
