Pros

Amazing science and brilliant minds. General sense that you're contributing to something great.

Cons

Personal experiences at Broad are solely determined by which group you're working in. Has grown very large and feels very corporate and cold. Attempts to promote employee culture feel disingenuous and forced. There are zero development opportunities for employees in administration. If you don't have a PhD, you are treated like a second-class citizen. Poor performers are allowed to skate by and are never dealt with while strong performers are forced to pick up the slack - which leads to high turnover in important roles.

Serious science with fun people

Pros

On the administrative side, at least, work-life balance is given its due. A large number of staff are young parents, and there is a tacit understanding that one of the trade-offs for a non-profit salary is greater control over your schedule and the ability to fulfill family obligations when necessary. This doesn't seem to get in the way of "meeting the misson," however, which is supporting great research. The environment is pleasant to work in, though the academic nature of the organization lends itself to a more "organic," (or some might say "chaotic") way of doing business at times. Science is the name of the game here, and the senior scientists drive institutional growth and goals, sometimes in ways that can complicate things on the administrative side.

Cons

As noted above, science takes precedence over all here (as it should). This can make for a difficult-to-navigate administrative/business environment at times. It can also occasionally lead to a feeling of "marginalization" among non-scientists in some cases.

Pros

The science and projects are amazing. The people in both science and administration are passionate and exceptional. It is an exciting, fun and very challenging place to work. I really feel like I am making a difference and impacting the world every day I come to work.

Cons

I have worked in academia, industry and there is no place like the Broad Institute if you really love science and want to make a difference.
