Pros

It has so many available resources and academic labs are flexible in directing research, making it an exciting opportunity for young research associates to explore basic biology with high-throughput, cutting edge technologies. Very smart postdocs.

Cons

It is definitely more technology-development oriented than basic biology, but once the tech is matured, it serves as a great place to learn more about an engineering-based biology discovery mindset, at least in some labs. In academic labs, long hours are expected of RAs, just like of graduate students.
