Pros

PROS: Flexibility, Benefits, Culture The Broad is a place where you can feel good about the work you do. It is a non-profit in the service of humanity through science, and that is a great feeling. After ten years working at the Broad, though, it is easy to lose that feeling. Non-profits have their downside. The pay is at academic levels, and living in the Boston area, it can be hard to get by on what the Broad pays. It seems they know this, and compensate the employees very generously when it comes to benefits and vacation time. I've interviewed with several potential empoyers, and many have told me it is hard to pull employees away from the Broad because of the benefits. It is a place where you can get comfortable, spend a life-long career, and be content. It is also family-friendly place. But it is also a place where you can feel stifled if you have any sort of ambitions. If you are a good employee, you'll get a little recognition in your review and salary increase, but promotion has become a rare event. So like any employer, it is a mixed bag. You have to decide what is more important to you, flexibility or compensation.
