Pros

Working with top-level researchers, open collaborative environment, very exciting projects, many large-scale projects that not many academic/research entities can afford, high-profile publications, job stability, good benefits, 'just get the job done' attitude - working flexible hours or working from home is usually fine (there is a reasonable limit to everything though!). Academia-like environment without academic rivalry and backstabbing. Very competent and very approachable management.

Cons

Unclear career path for staff researchers, the organizational structure is quite flat. With many groups/labs/operational entities involved into large-scale projects, lack of proper communication can be felt sometimes that leaves projects falling through.

Pros

It is fantastic to be surrounded by brilliant and dedicated colleagues working at the cutting-edge of technology on the most important biomedical problems of our time. Scientists here are highly motivated.

Cons

I really can't think of any downsides - salaries here are lower than what you would get at a biotech or pharma company, but the freedom and self-direction of the research, without regard to the bottom line of producing marketable drugs, is worth it.

Pros

The environment at the Broad Institute of Harvard University and MIT fosters creativity, teamwork while working on complex biological questions.

Cons

It is hard to progress and change roles at the Broad institute of Harvard and MIT. Must be prepared to enjoy what you sign up for.
