Pros

I will be receiving a post graduate degree from a will known university.

Cons

Graduate research associates are not students and are not staff. As a senior graduate student, taking classes is frowned upon. Despite the fact that you work well over 40 hours a week your contract is for 20 hours a week making you part time staff. As part time staff you are not entitled to any benefits that apply to employees of the Ohio State University. GRAs are compensated for far less than what they are worth had they taken a job outside of academia and are rarely recognized for their contributions. GRAs are expected to give up their life and free time to work in the lab.

Pros

There is a lot of intellectual freedom to explore your career and your goals within the university. There is an excellent breadth of opportunities for cross-disciplinary study at OSU.

Cons

Universities typically pay less than positions outside in industry, but this is true across the board. The new policy of allowing graduate students to only register for 3 credits has eliminated one of the best perks for graduate students--free elective classes. This is a new policy that may change once the administration realizes the full impact of its policies.

Pros

Tuition payment, flexible hours, opportunity to network and do research. Helping students is gratifying and feeling appreciated really contributes to job satisfaction. Schedules are extremely flexible as long as 20 hours is worked within the week.

Cons

The monthly stipend sounds like a lot but really is too low to sustain a reasonable lifestyle for a graduate student. Getting paid monthly is hard on keeping a budget. Sometimes there is not enough work to be completed, and during other quarters the work is overwhelming when teaching a class while also taking classes yourself. Human resources and other supportive job services a lot of times are incompetent.
