Pros

The students are great to work with.

Cons

Never received the two raises I was guaranteed in my contract. You will do way more work than what you are supposed to do. Professors/staff are always behind on their duties, you may find yourself managing your co-workers and reminding your professor to do their job. You will receive little to no recognition for all of the extra work that you do. UTAs are entirely unappreciated and underpaid despite the fact that they are the sole reason the EED is successful. Course material is inaccurate, poorly written, and rubrics are incorrect/out of touch, which means a lot of extra work as a UTA to make sure class is running smoothly. All inadequacies with the class/course material falls on the UTA despite none of it being their fault. UTAs are not considered to be a part of the faculty despite their involvement and are not actually considered to be a TA (we are considered "graders" so they can pay us less), UTAs are not acknowledged at all and their feedback/expertise is not considered despite the fact that they do all the grading, a decent amount of teaching, and do the majority of the communication with students along with taking on responsibilities neglected by the professor and GTA.

Not the worst job I've had

Pros

The students are great. Departmental support is hit or miss, with a couple of stand-outs.

Cons

The lecturers are in constant fear of losing their jobs. The department is too big, and too focused on marketing. Leadership turns over frequently, so there's little continuity of vision. The lecturers get used like draft horses. Tenured fac ranges from indifferent to openly hostile, with a few exceptions. In the same department for seven years, and some of my office neighbors still never bothered to learn my name. My department chair had no idea who I was. I shared an office the size of a walk-in closet with six other full time lecturers.
