Pros

For the most part, Salem is a "vacation" from a true staffing career. A nice place to visit, but not build a future. Generally nice people.

Cons

Salem lacks leadership. The owners of the company are extremely nice, but are not business people by any stretch of the imagination, something they also lack. They are firmly entrenched in 1985 (with systems to match) and the company is notoriously back office heavy. Instead of the sales organization driving the business, lazy and rude hangers-on in a bloated back office run the show. If they can get in the way of producers making money, they'll find a way! A very D-list book of business and marketing programs developed by an Executive Assistant and you've got a company that doesn't grow, just languishes in neutral. Good people leave as soon as they figure out they were promised a future and financial gain that never materialize and slackers stay for years. The worst of the worst are promoted instead of fired and into strangely titled executive positions where they can do even less.

While you refer to a company that “languishes in neutral,” 2012 was Salem’s most successful year in its history – and we’re poised to surpass that in 2013. Our systems, marketing, and staff have been critical to that success. To refer to our clients as “D-list” is a misnomer, as our client list is comprised of a virtual Who’s Who among the best companies to work for in Chicago and nationally. We are proud of our employees and our client partnerships. While we believe that obtaining candid feedback is vital for our continuous improvement, I ask that you base your reviews on accurate information. We wish you all the best – and we stand by our commitment to being the best staffing company – and the best employer – we can possibly be.

Pros

They are "nice" and "polite" to your face, if that is something you value and If you need a job and have no choice than you have to do what you have to do, namely work for this awful company.

Cons

Generally unprofessional. Terrible communication, management, poor pay and no benefits for temps. No real skill at the job and obviously their clients have no faith in their abilities to find suitable staff - expect to be re-interviewed and "checked out" by the client even for temp assignments - a clear sign that the clients have been burned in the past by poor quality temp staff. Just another greedy temp agency skimming 25% of your salary, if they can find you regular work I guess that it's worth it but this company is barely making it and the staff is the usual motley collection of sad sacks who couldn't care less.

Thank you; we encourage honest, candid feedback, and we’d appreciate the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with you about your experience. It seems there may be a misunderstanding regarding how Salem operates. We do have a great benefits program for our assignment employees, and our compensation structure has been benchmarked as highly competitive. Please know that Salem does not take any portion of assignment employees’ salary, nor is this a common industry practice. Please call us so that we may further discuss your experience.

Thank you for your feedback. We certainly are a fast-paced environment, and we’re proud of those friendly employees you reference! We do encourage our employees to live “a life in balance” – but, yes, occasionally, a client’s needs must be our top priority, and we are fully committed to meeting those needs every time they arise. It’s part of what makes this organization great: our willingness to go the extra mile for our clients and for the assignment employees we place with them. Those who do that, and those who exemplify our core values of Integrity, Action, and Excellence, are met with opportunities to advance and to excel and to enjoy long, rewarding careers with us.
