Pros

Loved the clients and felt that therapy groups were helpful to the clients. The houses were well-staffed and they had a great independent living program where therapists helped clients gain employment and housing upon graduation from the program. The Third Way Center school for the kids helped prepare them for the world beyond high school.

Cons

I felt that staff did not advocate for the clients as effectively as they could have. Burnout levels were very high amongst staff and therapists. Supervision for therapists was not run in a manner where therapists felt free to talk openly about their experiences with clients. Therapists were routinely attacked for their own personal past experiences in a group supervision setting instead of in a confidential setting and forced to discuss their own traumatic experiences.

Pros

You will learn immense amounts about how to conceptualize cases, how to take a full history, and how to encounter myriad situations you probably never thought you could face. Within the mental health field in Denver, the pay is competitive. Some of the senior staff/supervisors are easy to connect with and are trying to help you make an impossible job manageable. If you love connecting with youth, bad behavior doesn't faze you, and you stay calm under a lot of pressure, this is the job for you. It is not for everyone, however!!

Cons

The stress level for this job is through the roof. You are never really "off" duty and you often need to make time when you are home to catch up on emails and therapeutic notes. Depending on the team, there can be little to no support or quite a bit of support. This is inconsistent. The senior staff expect a lot from you and are willing to help you, but they can also be very direct and harsh, creating an environment of fear. I would also say the environment can become manipulative. Obviously, working with the kids can be stressful, too! These are very hurt kids whose behavior is their way of communicating to us, but you have to learn to take nothing personally, because their behavior can be violent, hurtful, tantrum-like.
