Pros

- If you're into agile processes, DevOps, etc. you'll find other people here who also are. - Most people here I've come across are fairly amiable and it isn't competitive or cut-throat. - If you're into traveling for work there can be some opportunities there. However, they will be constrained more now obviously due to COVID, but also due to cost-cutting measures of management in recent years after the company was bought out. - Little oversight and you have more control over how much work and responsibility you want to take on.

Cons

- Work isn't interesting. I've asked countless ThoughtWorkers over the years about how they're liking their current account and the answer at best is always "Yeah...Good...". Rarely, if ever, has someone answered with enthusiasm about what they're currently working on. - As others have mentioned, the pay is quite bad. While I've heard this across the board, I can speak more accurately on the San Francisco pay. It's been far below market since I started at the company, but recent compensation increases have been astoundingly low. For instance, employees promoted to the Principal grade level, one that is quite prestigious and goes through a separate and more rigorous process, were receiving pay increases of under $5k. On top of that, new hires are receiving pay closer to market value which isn't sitting well with employees who have been with the company for some years. Additionally, the company has recently gone public, generating capital that doesn't seemed to be trickling down to employees. - The quality of people has been steadily dropping. Some new hires I've worked with have really startled me with gaps in their knowledge of CS fundamentals and even just basic computer knowledge that I would expect from someone who's fresh. The interview process was recently overhauled to expedite the hiring of candidates which in turn has lowered the bar. - More travel restrictions (unrelated to COVID). After being purchased by a private equity company, one of the cost cutting measures was to put more oversight into employee travel and be more strict about expenses. - No ownership of products and work. ThoughtWorks is a consulting company, so clients bringing us in will naturally only be willing to give up so much control and responsibility. One positive light here for me personally was that working at ThoughtWorks made me realize how much I value ownership. If you're just starting off your career with little to no experience and training, ThoughtWorks may be an alright option for you. However, I would strongly encourage you to use it as a backup and look elsewhere for career opportunities based on the current climate of the company and the worse state it's on course for.

Pros

Everyone is treading water and doesn't know what to do or where to go next.

Cons

Having been part of this company for over 5 years, I've witnessed both prosperous moments and challenging ones. Regrettably, the current situation appears to be the most challenging we've encountered. I have reservations about the company's ability to reverse this downward trend, as the situation appears to deteriorate with each passing day. During uncertain times, the company's management appears to be lacking in effectiveness. They persist in providing their top executives with a base salary of $500,000 (not including stocks and bonuses) while attempting to stabilize their financial situation through substantial staff reductions. To date, they have executed two layoffs in the current year, affecting approximately 10% of their workforce. Moreover, they are contemplating another round of layoffs in the upcoming fall and early Q1 '24 if they are unable to correct their course. Additionally, they seem to terminate skilled employees while retaining individuals who may lack the necessary expertise, resulting in the loss of three significant contracts this year, which led to the recent August layoff. A significant portion of the company's personnel seems to prioritize style over substance, resembling used car salespeople who rely heavily on rhetoric. If you're currently employed here, it's wise to remain objective and explore other opportunities. If you are contemplating joining this organization, it is advisable to seek a workplace that genuinely values its employees rather than one that merely pays lip service to this principle. If you hold stocks in this company, you may want to contemplate the option of selling.

Thank you for providing this very thoughtful feedback. We confirm that we have made a number of Thoughtworkers redundant in the US. We strive to make Thoughtworks equitable, reflective and inclusive of the society in which we live, however, these changes were necessary to support the future growth of our business. We did not make this decision lightly and regret that we had to say goodbye to some talented and passionate Thoughtworkers. We'd like to invite you to continue the dialogue by reaching out directly to tim.ogorman@thoughtworks.com.

A cult with a heritage

Pros

* Technical excellence. The consultants, especially those who started years before the APAX acquisition, are some of the smartest people you'll see in the tech sector. * The internal "software dev" mailing list has high quality technical conversation. * If you're lucky, you may get staffed on a project where you learn interesting things about both business and technology. * Opportunities to be visit and work in offices and clients in many countries, again, depending on your luck and connections.

Cons

* Thoughtworks is a cult. You have a vague sense when you're in it. It becomes much clearer once you leave. It has all the hallmarks of a cult: adulation of its founder; widespread indoctrination that starts with TW University for graduate hires; vociferous advocacy of its "secret sauce", i.e. the TW way; and low tolerance for differences of opinion, particularly on the so-called "social justice" pillar. * About that pillar: there is a strangely dogmatic combination of neo-socialism and neo-liberalism that runs through the company, especially some in leadership positions. Any dissenting voices, even those who simply ask their political views to be left alone, are likely to be shouted down and ostracized. * Who you know and how you impress them weighs more than what you know and how you can contribute. Thoughtworks is more prone to this than the average company. The so-called flat hierarchy encourages consultants to curry favors on the grapevine. The one with the most favorable rumors is likely to get better projects and promotions. * The leadership teams seem to relish their roles as petty tyrants. If your project's Delivery Leadership Team, usually 3 people strong, has a loudmouth who dislikes you, it is very likely you'll find it hard to last on the project. What's more, you'll get obscure negative feedback like "difficult to work with", "doesn't align with TW values", etc., which is sure to dent your career aspirations.
