Pros

I found the senior leadership team inspiring , particularly the CEO and VP of Customer Success. Lots of positive vibes and energy at work everyday (at least pre-COVID). My teammates and managers were super supportive, and I never felt like an undervalued team member. I was genuinely inspired by the company's mission to empower small restaurant business owners and delight their guests, and this mission pushed me to want to do my best everyday.

Cons

Before COVID, I think it was no secret that Toast paid employees below market from a cash basis, but a lot of us believed that there was enough value in the equity to make the overall compensation worth it. Despite a flexible work from home culture and unlimited PTO, the hours were nonetheless very long, and work-life balance was almost impossible to achieve. There are a lot of groups and layers within Toast, making cross functional work extremely cumbersome and processes more convoluted than need be. Rather than promoting internally, Toast also preferred to hire from the outside whenever a new role needed to be fulfilled, so I personally felt like it was hard to see a promotional path forward.

Pros

Great friendships Free snacks Unlimited PTO?

Cons

- There is “unlimited” PTO. But really there is an unspoken expectation on how much you take off. You WILL be talked to if you take more than 15 days off and it WILL be measured against your performance. I was told specifically by management that “we say unlimited paid time off but it really means 15 days a year.” - So much disorganization within the technical support role. You’re not just technical support, you do billing, finance and much more. - Although there are a few very good leaders, most of the leaders are immature and talk bad about people.. for taking time off. - You will never get a promotion, unless you apply for a different position within the company. I understand that they are trying to promote equality, but all this really does is cause people to go unseen for the hard work they put in. Although they do recognize people’s achievement you will never be promoted for it. This can in turn cause employees to become cruisers. What I mean by this is, they don’t try to do better, and they don’t do bad. They just stay the same as if they’re on cruise in a vehicle. - If you do apply for a position to move up within the company, don’t expect the managers to work with you to move up. The managers have told people that they should apply for a position but once they had the interview they turned them down. For example I worked with a colleague who was in tier 1, they were told by a manager that they should apply for tier 2 because they think they would be a good fit. During the interview my colleague got turned down the position because they didn’t appear confident enough.

Pros

At first the company was everything I had dreamed of. Modern office spaces, free snacks & BEER!! It had an appearance of being a dream of a job. The "unlimited" PTO was also an amazing benefit offered.

Cons

The Customer Success team is treated like the scum of the company. They are looked down upon by other departments & a majority of the day to day workload is put on to them. The team is micromanaged & the only thing that matters is stats. 50% of the company was laid off back in March. They have started bringing people back, but no one for the Support team, even though call volume is 30% higher than what it was prior to the layoffs. There was not an annual pay increase. They criticize you for using the "unlimited" PTO. There is no longer 401k matching. The mood overall of lately is "Deal with it or leave".

This was a tough review to read, but thank you for sharing your perspective. I recognize that it is a difficult time for the Customer Success Team and we’re actively working to provide a better experience for you and your teammates. As the leader of this team, I want to acknowledge how much I and the entire Toast team appreciate your hard work and passion for helping our customers succeed. You have and always will be a crucial, meaningful and impactful part of the Toast team. We’ve unfortunately had to make some difficult, necessary and temporary changes to our benefits and merit cycle due to the ongoing pandemic, While certainly not a replacement, we hope you’ll find value in our recently announced summer hours and home office provision policies. I encourage you to continue to share your feedback, as it's crucial to help us understand how the changes we're making are impacting your experience. As always please feel free to set up time for further discussion with me, your manager or your PSP. -Emmanuelle Skala Sr. Vice President Customer Success
