Pros

I'm so lucky to have worked several years at Toast. Rode the rocketship to IPO and the money was life changing. Just as important is the halo effect on my resume having been at a top (local) tech company. I learned a lot about my domain, and it set me up very well for my next role. Pleasant, honest coworkers. A product with clear product market fit. I'm rooting for Toast!

Cons

Being a public, mid size tech company means there's less urgency and more bureaucracy. Many within Product and Engineering are coasting, which is great for WLB, but not great if you want to develop. There's an increased focus on cutting costs, so the days of a growing team are over. Unless you are in the offshore offices. There's bad nepotism in the company. Family members of executives get positions and accelerated promotions. I'll never forget how we fired 50% of the company and cancelled the internship program in 2020 but the CEO's daughter got an internship. It's demoralizing, but not a toast unique problem.

Pros

Fantastic culture, lots of internal growth, encouragement from leadership to grow your career, and surprisingly you don't get stuck in sales here either. It's good money once you start making it and it's a fantastic product and sales organization. The work is fulfilling and makes an impact and builds on itself. Sabbatical, unlimited pto, flexible work hours.

Cons

The expectations of you are pretty insane. Max effort on all fronts at all times. The work-life balance is considered a work-life blend because everyone works a million hours a week. Its hard on your relationships to be married to your job. It's not the workaholic culture that is promoted, it's a culture that promotes being"passionate about what we do" above all else. Even life outside of the job which is pretty rough. Expectations are extremely high and never ending. Lots of burnout

Thank you for sharing this feedback. While I'm happy to see that there are many aspects of your Toast experience that you're enjoying, I am disappointed in your remarks around work/ life balance. We know that this role can be challenging, so we have tried to implement many new programs and resources to encourage a better work/life blend. If you do not feel like you're able to take advantage of these options, please reach out to me, your manager, or your People Success Partner. We are all here to help you thrive. - Joe Starzec, VP of Sales

Pros

Unlimited PTO Will put you on the radar of recruiters for better companies to save / poach you

Cons

To echo another review posted: Both in terms of the work and the culture, this is ALSO the worst job I've ever had and I deeply regret ever coming to Toast. While another reviewer suggests you ask questions on your interview about the work you’ll be doing of your colleagues during your interview to avoid being deceived; I did just that and was told that talking to me about work that the team has done is “confidential” (regardless of having signed an NDA before my interview). Frankly, they don’t want to tell you they have no idea what you’ll be doing, at what level, and for whom. It seems they make it up after you’ve started. I can also confirm, pay is grossly below market. They preach about “internal equity” whilst low-balling job applicants and wonder why the talent is mediocre. It’s not my problem Billy accepted crap pay 5 years ago as a justification for why I shouldn't be paid market value today. Also agree: The culture around DEI is A JOKE here - never seen a place that so adamantly touts itself as inclusive while falling so flat. For the most part, unless you’re a white male, have an Ivy League degree, or worked at the golf channel, forget meaningful advancement or a spot at any leadership table unless it’s at a company that isn’t Toast. It’s the least DEI company I’ve ever seen. Speaking of touting, they also like to tout about how they’re an amazing “best place to work” while hoards of people are quitting and almost everyone I’ve met since I started that isn’t leadership has complained about how terrible Toast is to work, how much they’re overworked, how leadership shifts priorities, or engages in wasteful nonsense to some degree. It’s like watching leadership twisting the arms of their teams into submission until they finally say “fine, sure, whatever, Toast is soooo good to work for”. Perhaps Toast was a great place to work at some point in their history but it’s smoke and mirrors today. Short of that, the company is excessively disorganized and wastes a mind-numbing amount of time and resources in their disorganization. Seeing how customers are mistreated, forgotten, and ignored is embarrassing. I dont tell people I work at Toast because it’s so embarrassing. The company recently went public and you can tell in all the textbook bad ways. It’s a slippery slope down from here.
