Pros

Most of the people who have worked here are creative and amazing educators. The work is fun.

Cons

The upper management is toxic, manipulative, and abusive. Within the outdoor education community, it is well known that Trackers has a history of racism, cultural appropriation, and toxic masculinity. When addressing these issues with management, staff are ignored, ridiculed (called "snowflakes"), and yelled at. There are countless stories of staff trauma and abuse at Trackers. Below is a list of some of the things management has told full time staff to do. Write incident reports on staff behaviors that occurred during private interactions outside of work hours. Lie to staff regarding work availability and scheduling. Don't fire staff. Stop giving them work and make them uncomfortable until they quit. When staff were fired, some of them were told not to try collecting unemployment. Share private information about other staff shared in personal conversations. Lie to staff regarding pay. Drive vehicles they were not licensed to drive. Drive buses and vehicles with recorded safety and maintenance issues. Conduct programs at or harvest from parks the company did not have proper permits for. These directions were given in manipulative ways. Many full time staff did not know that they were being told to do unethical or illegal things. If there were ever any repercussions, full blame fell on the staff. Management took no responsibility and often claimed they were unaware these things were happening.

Pros

Getting to spend time outside with kids.

Cons

The culture of Trackers is incredibly toxic. The CEO is an incredibly abusive narcissist. Staff are working under unrealistic expectations with little to no support from management. Rather than being trained teachers are forced to listen to the owner brag about himself. When you consider that teachers will be teaching children to use knives and bows and arrows, this is an unsafe combination. Weird culture around alcohol and exclusivity. No willingness to have conversations around race. Teachers who question the inappropriate behaviors of management are fired. Avoid this toxic place at all costs!

Pros

I worked in the field 3 summers in a row for Trackers and each summer was super intense~ high paced scheduling, long hours, lots of kids. I learned group management and wrangling skills and I got my CDL so I could drive a big bus, but also so much more than that. I learned how to have fun with kids again while being a grown-up. How many other jobs give you the resources to fully activate your own imagination and persona to connect children to their own autonomy, creativity and belonging to the natural world? I loved having the freedom to share my love of nature to enthusiastic children with a mix of hard skills, fantasy and fact. I loved witnessing kids grow and learn and share, become more confident and more aware of the lives around them. It means everything to me to feel I'm making a difference and I am happy to feel I did during my time there.

Cons

As a seasonal job, the end is always in sight.
