Pros

College atmosphere was great. Full cost of Tuition waved, time off, when the college is closed, you're off as well (except Spring break. The students had the whole week off, we just got Friday). It is essentially like working for the public sector (which it is) with the exception of more time off: 2 weeks for Christmas Holidays, 3 days for Thanksgiving, and the usual government holidays off: MLK, 4th, Labor Day, etc.

Cons

The city of Troy is very boring for a 28 year old. No night life, limited restaurants, entertainment non existent. Troy is great is you are raising a family, love the small town life, not looking for a lot to do on the weekends. I worked in I.T., the management was terrible. They certainly look down on you for asking for time off. One time our supervisor "got on to us" because we didn't look at out ticket queue over the Christmas Holidays (which we are not required to do being that our particular department was hourly). Everyone one is driven more by fear of being harassed by upper management than actually being personally motivated to get the job done. There are so many unrealistic expectations in the I.T. department at Troy. I never got a good positive vibe working there in the three years I was there. I remember when I put in my two weeks, the supervisors were upset that people kept taking the position that I was in and leaving within a year, the position only paid 24k. Their reason for being upset was that they said they were tired of the position being treated like a stepping stone. They were so disconnected from reality that they couldn't (or denied to) see the position for how it really was: a stepping stone position. But like I said, there were a lot of realistic expectations there. This is definitely one of the places where yelling takes place, arguments are heard out loud, and turnover in any position that is not upper management is rampant. Its sad too because I see how it could be a great place to work, but the people you have to work for here will need to retire or move on before the work atmosphere changes. I would strongly urge any one looking for a job here within I.T. to consider other options as long as the current CIO is there.
