Pros

Great work-life balance. Most weekends and holidays off, and you’re home almost every night. That’s a rare thing in the jet pilot world. TXDOT does a lot to cater to employees with families. Great group of coworkers.

Cons

At the end of the day, the salaries for pilots are far below the industry standard. Government jobs often pay less than their private sector counterparts, but TXDOT pilots probably make just under half of what they would be making in the private sector. When you factor in the 9% that gets pulled out of each paycheck to fund the retirement annuity system, the take home pay for jet captains is not nearly enough to keep up with the cost of living in the Austin area.
