      Laid back atmosphere, yet a lot of red tape

      Pros

      California is beautiful. UCD is small enough that people from various departments get to know each other. Davis is small, fairly safe and friendly. A 40-hour week seems to be pretty standard, and lots of holidays.

      Cons

      There is an absurd amount of red tape compared to other places (in other states). People are very laid back, which can be a problem if you need something done in a hurry. Pay is average, but cost of living is high.

      Pros

      You're on your own schedule, so as long as you get the work done, they're fine with your timing. Sometimes you have to come in to meetings, but that's about it. Super flexible with finals, etc.

      Cons

      There can be VERY little oversight from management or your bosses. Sometimes, you'll be collecting a paycheck and basically forgotten about. It's annoying when you want to contribute.
