      Great learning experience, not what I want to do as a career though.

      Pros

      My adviser was really helpful and taught me all that I needed to know. I was able to fit my hours around my life, as long as I got what I needed done.

      Cons

      Compensation and benefits were extremely low, if not nonexistent. I had to follow research run by adviser, and was not able to come up with my own research.

      Lots of potential freedom in terms of time (vacations) if you plan things right.

      Cons

      The graduate student researcher pay scale is based on seemingly arbitrarily set levels, so a graduate student in one group/department can get paid way more than a graduate student in another.
