Pros

The UC system is a strong place to work for research, and there is a lot of growth happening on campus.

Cons

UC Merced is still very isolated from its community, there is little infrastructure outside the University, and the faculty is still an ecclectic grouping–there are not many well developed faculty groups/departments. Additionally, UC post docs do not get Kaiser.

Pros

Great faculty, small community of researchers and postdocs

Cons

Many oversights in planning, the 2020 project has caused complete chaos, no amenities on campus

Pros

The work is autonomous, very interesting, and fun to work on. Biggest difference between graduate school and post doc is no more course requirements and slightly more pay.

Cons

Research in a bubble. Many people will not be able to easily understand what you work on. the work environment is probably too isolated.
