Pros

Students truly want to learn and feel grateful for attending UC Merced. UC Merced community has the opportunity to create unique experiences, programs, and events.

Cons

Lack of resources in the community and on campus - seems to be growing too fast for what is actually available (space, staff, time, etc.) Quite difficult for staff/faculty who do not have roots in the Central Valley to build a life.

Pros

Friendly colleagues, good benefits, love the thriving campus environment - students are fantastic to be around.

Cons

Leadership does not practice what they preach. There is no transparency in decision-making and each division still works in a silo. My biggest frustration is with Human Resources. UC Merced has the most incompetent human resources staff I’ve ever met who sits on requests for weeks and oftentimes months. It took almost a full year for them to complete a classification review for an employee. Discipline letters takes months to approve even though they use the same template letters. The Managers do not respond to calls. There is zero accountability from the new HR Directors either. Powell left that department in a mess! The only HR staff who was knowledgeable, competent, and delivered on her promises resigned last summer to pursue other opportunities. They should have done more to retain her because HR is a bigger mess now with the dissolution of the business partner mode. It is unfortunate that they are losing their best employees due to their inability to recognize true talent and engage, develop, and retain those talents.

Pros

- A great environment to learn and grow with your peers. Management works well around your class and finals schedule, as long as you work with them. In hindsight, I appreciate how empowered I was as a Student Supervisor/Manager to help change our processes to improve our operations. - Management is firm but fair. You can tell they really care about the students working there. - You learn how to interact with all types of people in a safe environment. - You really bond with your coworkers. - It paid the bills during my college experience.

Cons

- I never wanted to eat at the DC. Not because things were unsanitary (although salad bar is just set up for failure, let's be real) but because you just get so tired of it. - The career workers were/are resistant to change. They tend to be set in their ways, and they know what they can and cannot do without getting fired. Many (but not all) career workers abused that knowledge. - The pay was not fair, when I worked there, for what they ask you to do as a Supervisor/Manager. Hopefully they've since improved that, but hey - it's a college job, and looks good on a resume.
