Pros

Good place to gain first hand experience while going to school. Makes schedule to work around your classes.

Cons

Pay is minimum wage unless you get supervisor or manager position. Position given during shifts is random, so you may get a really busy position or a very slow position.

Lack of accountability

Pros

UCR offers a decent salary above the postdoc level and there is a good amount of freedom as in any other research institution.

Cons

I am appalled at the lack of accountability I have seen at UCR. Graduate students and postdocs are used and discarded without regard for their careers. Some faculty's lack of ethics and a system designed to protect them makes this a very bad place to grow. Fortunately not all faculty is the same but some bad apples spoil the whole bunch.
