Pros

Loved the opportunities to teach undergraduate courses while getting my PhD. The students are bright, driven, and academically engaged. Loved the lab I worked in, many research opportunities.

Cons

Graduate programs need to invest more time in supporting graduate students. Mental health issues are common among grad students and should be discussed more. I am grateful to have received my PhD from UCR but it was a long road and I struggled often with imposter syndrome, lack of support from the department, and general feelings of not belonging. Also many PhD students seem to be treated like free labor instead of future colleagues.
