Pros

The Graduate Student Affairs office were very helpful when issues arose during graduate school.

Cons

Depending on your program your experience will differ. But for my program I felt that a lot of the faculty advisors for PhD students didn't really care about listening or advising the students and there was a lack of adequate resources for students to navigate difficult situations (bad relationships with PIs, difficulty finding labs with funding, etc.) during their graduate program. It simply felt that there were many graduate advisors that simply didn't care about the welfare of their doctoral students or their progress. Additionally their was a lack of professional development for graduate students both in academic careers and in alternative careers post-PhD.

Pros

Benefits, culture, liberal mindset, diversity and inclusivity, well-meaning employees, pension, and service time reciprocity.

Cons

Bureaucracy, slow to act, and the sense that one hand rarely knows what the other is doing. These are all factors a person should expect in an organization this size.
