Pros

Flexible hours, great research environment, newer research buildings.

Cons

There are no long term contracts for project scientists and you never know when you can be let go. If the project's funding ends, the position is over and any chance of extension is gone. Not really a position on can use to make any future plans.

Pros

Young passionate faculty in emerging fields. School is expanding its avenues to support its graduate students with different backgrounds and career interests. Very diverse graduate student body. Cost of living is great as I was able to pay off my small student loan debt.

Cons

Problematic salary/retirement recordkeeping and/or infrastructure for graduate students - some departments in STEM are more supported than others by the school and automatic contributions to retirement benefits are broken. Cost of living is offset by the location, many graduate students do not have much to do.
