Pros

You have a lot of flexibility and opportunities to develop new areas. There are plenty of talented people in all fields to collaborate with and endless original topics of interest.

Cons

Not surprisingly, UCLA if very "faculty centric" and if one does not have an academic title it can be difficult (though not impossible) to work within the system. In particular, writing proposals for new research funding and hiring people to do research work is much more difficult.

Pros

A very good place to gain new skills and network with some of the best in your field. Moreover, all the staff members involved are helpful which makes an "outsider" feel at ease so that they can focus on their work instead of having to worry about the logistics of working there.

Cons

Some people may find it to be a fast-paced work environment.
