Pros

Healthcare field and a major employer in Western PA region that is continuing to grow, so fairly strong job security; selection of benefit options, paid time off, relatively formal and established raise system.

Cons

If you are not an MD, you will be underpaid. Advancement in the organization is mixed and varies greatly based on department/division. Benefits are okay, but I've had better health insurance with previous companies (pretty sad considering UPMC is a hospital system). Although relatively well-defined, the raises are minimal and often do not cover cost of living increases. Whereas some employers really look out for employees, it is clear UPMC is not such one. The anti-union stuff is really showing true colors of UPMC, which touts itself as a not-for-profit organization but seems to pay it execs VERY well and operate with a large "surplus." The anti-union/anti-profit campaign no doubt costs a good deal of money (money which should be used to improve the hospital system and assist others).

UPMC lacks respect for employees

Pros

Some friendly coworkers and patients

Cons

UPMC leadership is conducted with fear. For example, they try to scare employees with termination if they talk with a union even though its their right. Employees are not valued or respected, and because of that morale and patient care suffers. The raises we receive are insulting and not given based on performance like they try to tell you they are. The top 22 executives were paid a total of 36.6 million dollars last year. Jeff Romoff collected 6 million of that money. It's beyond most of us how UPMC can claim they are non-profit and have a payroll like that for 22 of the top executives. Don't believe it? Check the newspaper articles and you'll also see how much money UPMC dishes out to executives family members. All this is required to be disclosed by the IRS. There is so much more that goes on that makes us upset that doesn't get mentioned.

Pros

For the most part, have loved my job, and loved my clients. Hours are reasonable, pay is adequate. Benefits rock.

Cons

Different standards for different people. Politics. Drama in departments. Little feedback and improvement opportunities.
