Pros

Being a nationally well-known hospital, having UPMC (no matter the specific facility) on your resume is a definite plus. There are numerous types of jobs available ranging from the normal '9-5' desk work to the '24-7' hands-on work with patients. Whether you are a student, fresh-out of college, looking for a career change, or just need a job ASAP, you really can't go wrong with UPMC. Specifically within WPIC, the workers are diverse (age/race) and it's a good place to get experience working with mental health patients of all kinds. Plus, the benefits and retirement package are decent.

Cons

The turnover rate is high, which is never a good sign. WPIC mandates (mandatory overtime) their workers often mostly due to the shortage of employees, and direct care workers often work understaffed on their units. Working with patients is very stressful and can be dangerous at times depending on which population you work with... the employee shortage does not help these matters at all. Loyalty and trust between co-workers/supervisors is questionable. There are no worthwhile incentives offered by management. Favoritism and general unfair treatment is seen between select supervisors and co-workers. Equipment and furniture are old and outdated, and there's often a shortage on towels and bed linen on some patient units. How that happens in a place that racks in billions in revenue (not-for-profit or not), I don't know. Oh, and parking sucks.

Pros

The best reason to work for UPMC is that it is a teaching hospital. A new graduate nurse has all the opportunities in the world to learn from experienced RNs and also many different levels of MDs. I can not think of a time where I needed an answer quickly and someone wasn't there to help me answer it. UPMC offers the ability to move up, they encourage furthering your education and give out great educational benefits. There are great nurses at UPMC who encourage new nurses to become the best they can be. It is just a positive work place.

Cons

Lack of communication from higher management

Pros

1. PTO - no questions asked (at least in my office). 2. Decent enough benefits; I'm young and healthy, though. 3. Good, city location. 4. Locally and nationally recognized. 5. Tuition benefits help -some- but could be better.

Cons

Not much potential for career growth. Entry level employees are unable to move up (or receive pay increases) without dramatic action (i.e. advanced degree obtainment).
