Pros

Coworkers are hardworking and become family

Cons

Ratios have adjusted to the point staff and patients are unsafe. They stack incentives to the point no one cares any longer. It's impossible to work around the clock. Millions were spent on a re-imaging initiative, but they failed to adequately pay staff. More than half the staff has resigned and gone to travel. Who wants to stick around for minimum wage when you can get paid decently on assignment?

Pros

It’s impossible to be fired. My role was laid back to the point where I had about 3 hours of work to complete in a 40 hour week. I was so bored I quickly found employment elsewhere.

Cons

Insurance is pretty bad and I chose the top tier plan. I had better UPMC insurance not working for the actual company but though another employer who had purchased their insurance on the free market. Retirement is 4% March after 6 months and vested after 2 years. I find 4% to be low for an enormous corporation such as UPMC. In general the pay is extremely low - borderline abject poverty. Myself and many of my friends, including physicians have found employment elsewhere for this reason. I’m not sure why UPMC feels they can attract top talent and continue to pay bare minimum.

Pros

My fellow co workers truly cared about patients and their outcome. Our 7s oncology/ geriatric floor was like a family. We held each other together as a team.

Cons

Always working short handed with the patient population that needed the most care. Unreal patient assignments for 1 aide. 3rd shift was dangerously understaffed pertaining to patient safety and care. Many times only 1 aide for 50 patients. Yearly review depended on how many points you have gotten. one way was by going to the monthly meetings for committees you have to mandatory be on.
