Pros

As a Communications Officer in the US Air Force, you get have a great opportunity to learn leadership/management. Education and medical benefits are good, as well as a retirement plan after serving just 20 years. In the communications arena, you can focus your IT skills if you apply yourself.

Cons

In general, the benefits ourweigh the cons. You can expect to move locations every 3-4 years and typically change jobs every 1-2 years. This provides a greater breadth of experience, but makes it difficult to specialize in a specific area. Also, you can expect to deploy during your career, some people more than others.

Cons

Office Politics; Other minor things like uniform issues, poor implementation of performance evaluations at all levels, may have to go to areas you may not want to for work.

Pros

The benefits are great. Health care is free. You can retire in 20 years. They pay for education. The Air Force can also offer the opportunity to learn valuable skills that will apply in the civilian sector.

Cons

There are a number of downsides. I spent about 1/3 of the time deployed. If you have kids, that adds up to an awful lot of missed childhood. As I said, the health care is free, but you should expect the quality of health care to be equivalent to free healthcare. Physicians' skill are overall lacking to say the least. When you enlist, you should expect to beaten down emotionally for the first four or five years of your career.
