Pros

Opportunity for all based on political facility. If you can focus you can move ahead no matter what. Ingrained hierarchy can be plus or minus. Culture on paper superb, but in reality not healthy for non white , Protestant , non middle age men.

Cons

Bosses openly rascist since they can't be fired for anything. Women, all races creeds and color can get ahead but old boys at top will openly deride Muslims about beards, Catholics about Pope, Jews about being "quirky" money grubbers, Women about babies, daycare and nursing. I have heard all these things openly said by bosses. EEO rules followed but not embraced. You cant eliminate prejudice when those most guilty have so little self awareness , they don't realize they create a hostile atmosphere.

Pros

There are some challenging and exciting jobs in the army. During a time of war, resourcing and support of the mission is high and so is morale. Many opportunities for continuing education. Great benefits for all. Good compensation for those who stick around. Some of the nations best and brightest as co-workers. Close knit team environment in most organizations.

Cons

Not all positions are created equally. Little to no incentive to excel. Very little control over your career if it varies from the needs of the army. All stick no carrot (even for top performers). Some of the nations least productive and morally bankrupt as co-workers. Failure in retaining the best and brightest especially those who bring diversity of ideas and approach to the profession.
