Pros

Worldwide opportunities in service to the nation and ability to make differences. You are provided 30 days paid vacation and opportunity for outstanding professional development and civilian education- regardless of rank. You will be involved with some of the most exciting and rewarding missions for the nation and frequently interact with other nations and thier military and government. The US Army offers some of the most advanced technology and services. The US Army has spent time and resources in support to family programs and quality of life, including facility upgrades and equipment. A sense of purpose and teamwork is one of the biggest rewards, as well as a post retirement income and additional opportinities as a retired military person that rivals any other industry.

Cons

Long hours and extended time away from family. You will work hard and spend time away, sometimes in combat zones for extended periods. This is part of the career and all military service is voluntary. Additionally, the military does not pay matching funds into a 401K type plan, though they have a 401K type plan, and your contributions offset your taxable income. You can be called with very little notice to deploy, so your family must understand this aspect of your career. You will also see frequent turnover in your workplace and have little ability to retain someone you have trained and mentored for more than 18-24 months. You will also change jobs 18-24 months which is good and bad. .

Pros

Serve Country. Great Benefits provided the government. These are especially good overseas. Medical Care for Soldiers families is virtually free, Housing Allowances, Cost of Overseas Living Allowance are tax-free benefits. The commissary (Army Grocery Store) stocks good old American products all over the world. Opportunities to live overseas are awesome and facilitiate traveling while off-duty.

Cons

Deployments away from families. Months away from families takes it toll on the Soldier and the family. Often months prior to a deployment Soldiers are away from families for weeks at a time which effectively makes a the deployment time longer. The big kicker is the months that the non-deployed spouse must be a single parent. Also, in most locations opportunities for well educated spouses are quite limited.

Pros

You are supporting your country, and some of the best people you will ever meet, American Soldiers. You get to see things and do things most people can't do, regardless of income. Occasionally, you get to witness history in the making, or make history.

Cons

Loyalty is not rewarded at all. Prehistoric categorization and compensation rules make it easier to hire someone "off the street" than someone in a temporary job who is already in the system. Some veterans receive extra preference, some receive none at all, for unclear reasons. Money available for training, equipment, etc, is feast or famine. There are quite a few slugs, many at the senior management level, who are doing just enough not to get fired, and react to change with hostility. There are now three different retirement systems in place, and they range from the incredibly generous to the embarassingly sparce. Under Rumsfeld, they implemented new policies designed to break the employee's union.
