Pros

The best reason to serve in the U.S. Army is to gain leadership and life skills. You will also learn how to serve with and for others from all walks of life. During my service I have learned multiple languages, earned a fully funded Master's degree, traveled around the world, been responsible for multi-million dollar operations, planned and led (directly and indirectly) up to 38,000 service members. I have lived in the most amazing locations within the United States and the World.

Cons

Physical fitness is a tremendous positive to the U.S. Army. However, after 20+ years you will take your lean, fit, running machine of a body and run smack into the reality of AGING. What you were able to do for many years with ease will start to slowly become very difficult. Not only will the aging process slap right in the face but you will still be expected to perform alongside young 17 & 18 year olds as if you were the same. This is a harsh reality that bites you when you least expect it.

Pros

lot's of time off on weekends and holidays. 30 days vacation per year and plenty of opportunities to travel across europe. We've seen Germany, Poland, Italy, France, Belgium (2 times), Paris, Berlin, Rome, Phillipines, Alaska, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Australia, and many other locales. I could say that working with a large group of diverse backgrounds is also very rewarding. One time I worked with the Polish Army, the Czech army, the British Army, the UK Army, and the Welsh Guard. I've seen the inside of helicopters, airplanes, and boats. I've been shot at, blown up, spit at, rocks thrown at, yelled at, flipped off, and more.

Cons

bullets, bombs, mortars, people who want to kill you. I've seen the inside of helicopters, airplanes, and boats. I've been shot at, blown up, spit at, rocks thrown at, yelled at, flipped off, and more. One time, at band camp, a mortar round landed in a building we were having a cookout in. It was really loud. You also spend a lot of time away from family and friends. I left for Iraq when my daughter was 7 weeks old and returned when she was 18 months. Our brigade was extended past 12 months, at the very last week of our 12 month tour. Kind of sucked.

Pros

The US Army provides a great culture and value system to work in. In general people are quite friendly and supportive. There are plenty of diverse projects to work on and many are interesting and challenging to keep employees fully engaged. The management gives ample freedom to employees to conduct their work to enable creativity and innovation. In addition, there are tremendous opportunities now because of major organizational and strategic transformational changes at play. Furthermore, hardwork and dedication is recognized and rewarded fairly. And importantly work-life balance is valued and the management is family friendly.

Cons

If one wants to pursue traditional business careers such as corporate finance or marketing, then possibilities are limited to none.
