Pros

The profession has a seasonal flow, and Q4 of the FY is the time when the headless chickens run around. Benefits are good, and the work life balance is good for the most part--probably especially compared to those within the field employed by private companies.

Cons

Once you go from being on the floor to supervisory role, the pay is really no longer commensurate with the job responsibilities/expectations, but almost all Fed Gov jobs are set by a pay scale of some kind. If in a performance based pay scale (as opposed to the GS scale or equivalent), you can climb that ladder a bit faster (assuming you do very good work). Previously, TW was a nice perk, especially in the DC area, but no longer. Office culture and morale ebbs/flows dependent on leadership like anywhere else.

Pros

Decent Salary, Vacation time, TSP investing opportunities, financial help with education, and a variety of training.

Cons

Long hours, hostile work environment, not good for a family.
