Pros

Steady paycheck, excellent medical and dental coverage for the whole family, a total of sixty days of regular leave in a year, and sort of unlimited convalescent leave. One of the most exciting benefit is re-location every 2 to 3 years at the Navy's expense. I always look forward to a new location, particularly overseas.

Cons

Duty is 24 hrs a day and 7 days a week

Pros

Vitally important work to guide future of U. S. Navy through planning, programming and budgetting for the future. Major responsibilities and opportunities are available here leading to superior job satisfaction.

Cons

Occasionally there is a requirement for long work hours. Though these ocassions are in frequent, they can run early in the morning or late inthe evening.

Pros

The old standards: leadership, camaraderie, patriotism, travel ("see the world"). Also, to a great degree, the ability to control your own destiny--there are certainly some exceptions, but for the most part, the Navy is a giant meritocracy. Your success is in your hands, and more often than not, results are valued over most anything else.

Cons

Unfortunately, it sometimes seems that the final "pro" mentioned is diminishing at an ever-increasing pace. Also, when those exceptions to the meritocracy happen--the unearned promotion or the failure to promote the deserving--it can be quite disheartening. Also, all that travel takes you away from home, and "working hours" is a concept that doesn't really jive with sea duty...
