Pros

The Navy provided many great benefits which are generally known. I was able to finance and finish my undergraduate degree while in the Navy without drawing on my GI Bill at all. Advancement is regular and the pay was fantastic for comparable jobs.

Cons

It is the military and as such the upper management is not always in tune with what is going on at the ground level. The abilities of the mid level managers varies greatly and, because you cannot quit or complain you may find yourself in the position of working for a miserable person.

Pros

No doubt being able to complete missions is the most satisfying part of the job. Some missions are really rewarding and worthwhile. At the end of some days you can feel certain you did something positive. The pay is good too. No 18 year old kid, unless he's a computer wiz, will get paid what an E-1 in the military does, and officer pay is very good. Some of the leaders we have a truly amazing people, outstanding role models for junior personnel.

Cons

That being said, most of your days will not be so rewarding. A great deal of your time will be spent spinning in circles because the senior leadership can't figure out where to go, or what it wants to do. You'll also be away from home and family a great deal. Expect to miss MANY holidays and special days (birthdays, and such).

Pros

Unlimited ability to advance and improve. Sense of pride and accomplishment that can be obtained nowhere else. They give you all the training you need, provide a full ride through school if you are willing to work for it, and there is less discrimination than almost anywhere you could work.

Cons

The downside would certainly be having to deploy away from family for extended periods of time in colse quarters with others and having little to no personal space. Another down side is obviously the money. While the compensation is fair considering that most come in at the entry level with little or no education, it is still just not a lot of money.
