Pros

It's a job Some co-workers are really great people (the only thing that made the job bearable)

Cons

The cons are seemingly endless: no benefits, takes 5+ years to make career, on-call every day, no set schedule, no set route, terrible managers who harass and micro-manage the carriers, laborious work, unions, have to use own vehicle sometimes, bad weather and roads in some areas, hostile patrons, hostile dogs, most mail is 'junk' anyway. Easily the most stressful job of my life. Christmas time finally did me in. A 65 hour week that had me near fainting from exhaustion and the manager found it amusing? DONE! The mental and physical toll was too much. And this is coming from a friendly hard working individual. The USPS is fated like the Titanic anyway. Proceed at your own career risk.

Pros

You interact with customers and you will get cordnation and delivery experience once you pass the battery exam. You get to see the sites and the view depending on which office you are assigned to.

Cons

Depending on which office you are assigned to, you maybe working for a postmaster who is unethical and unprofessional. The supervisor I work for tend to make rediculus guildlines, and has openly embarrassed carriers in front of customers. Some supervisor are quick to defend customers even when a carrier was not at fault when a situation arises.

Pros

The pay was pretty decent. I was able to lose a lot of weight by doing walking routes all summer, so that was pretty cool.

Cons

Management is a joke. They are the precise picture of everything you never want to work for. Management through intimidation is a big thing. Constantly adding more work to the people who work harder and taking more work from those who don't work as hard, which leads to employee frustration, as it is absolutely impossible to schedule anything after work Monday-Saturday. Constantly pushing the harder workers to go harder, go faster, while simultaneously letting the grumpy, lazy workers have a free ride. Managers who have never actually performed the job for which they are assigned to manage. Added to this, the constant fear of not having a job, as the USPS is not in very good shape financially. The incredible bureaucracy of the United States Postal Service makes everything at least twice as hard as it needs to be. But then, I guess that's the government.
