Great if you're flexible

Pros

Good pay, the hourly rate doesn't really matter as an RCA. Each route is evaluated based on size and amount of mail it receives so regardless of how long it takes you it's the same amount(9 hours for my route). You can finish your route and work a few hours on another and end up getting paid for 12 hours even if you only worked 8. The job keeps you healthy, I lost about 70lbs since I started. Once you learn the job it becomes incredibly easy.

Cons

You must make them your number 1 priority. School, family and social life take a back seat to the post office. You will have a primary route but you could be called in on any route and delivering a route you've never done is stressful. With Sunday delivery now, you could be working 7 days a week and around Christmas you can expect 10-12 hour days.

RCA being a sub carrier

Pros

-High starting pay -If you work for an office that has a lot of routes and not enough subs you can get a lot of overtime -Being outside in the Fall and Spring (in the North East) -Potentially getting new vehicles in next decade

Cons

-With USPS now delivering all AmazonPrime packages RCAs are required to work Sundays and ALL holidays. -No job security. You basically have to wait for a full time carrier to retire and be the next sub in line to get a full time job (I've been an RCA for 6 years) -Unhappy coworkers. -NO benefits, vacation, sick days. I've had to come in on days when I had the flu b/c a full time employee called in sick. -On call -Being outside in the Summer and Winter

Pros

- A place to work - Mostly climate controlled - The 2nd Amendment is denied at work - People send some crazy stuff in the mail and don't package it very well - It is cool to learn how the mail gets delivered

Cons

- Only $12.00 per hour - They say you are a 'casual' because you're not a fulltime employee - Because you're not a fulltime employee you do not receive any benefits - As a part time employee you will work about 50 hours per week - You will not receive overtime pay and have to go to the Department of Labor and file a complaint - If you wear a pedometer, you will see that you walk about 12 miles, on concrete, every 10 hours while pushing 2 ton carts. - Illegals get paid and treated better than a casual mail handler - A lot of defective and dangerous equipment - When people are injured, they don't report it because nothing good happens to people who report injuries on the job - One casual mail handler was told he had to return to work the day after a hernia surgery because it was an outpatient surgery
