Pros

Job security, learning opportunities in the maintenance craft and excellent benefits with retirement package. Good salary for someone without a college degree or profession or ability to succeed in the private sector. The large majority of employees are very dedicated to their profession and proud to represent the USPS.

Cons

Golden handcuffs ( meaning it is hard to leave once you are vested and comfortable ) Mindless boring work if you are involved in actually sorting the mail. Shift work which includes weekends and holidays, especially in the early years before attaining seniority. Management selection process lacking with promotions awarded by an out of date EEO system which uses race and gender quotas as the primary criteria for advancement.

Pros

Nice coworkers, decent pay. That's about all

Cons

6 days a week, hard to get a day off. Micro managed by the minute. Work in extreme heat, cold and rain.

Pros

Started with USPS in Woodland Hills California during a layoff from Lockheed in Burbank in 1984. Even being a new hire the office was booming with new routes and carriers retiring very often so it was easy to move up from a PTF to full in about 5 months.

Cons

So much mail and political mail since Woodland hills has many people who make lots and lots of expendable money and just buy and donate so much they are on every mailing list in the world. Mostly Hidden Hills got so much mail it was sick. I was slow in casing mail and might have been on border of 18/8. I put in so many 3996 that I had a sheet of them in my case. One time I screwed up and while doing a route as a T-6 i forwarded the entire bottom row of the case. And of course on one route i mis-delivered the first 6 houses on a block that had door mail slots and same address as the next block when I grabbed the wrong bundle of letters for the next block ... oh well .. Cons I guess was distance from my home and requirement of mandatory overtime.
