great job when I started 20 years ago, not many opportunities for advancement now.
Pros
good benefits, good pay, even without a college degree. If you have a good manager, it is still a good place to work.
Cons
Many experienced managers and postmasters have retired, leaving poorly trained people in their places. After 15 years of having several outstanding managers, I got stuck with a terrible one who made our lives hell. He has no respect for his employees, never takes responsibility for his own errors, knowledge is minimal, treats his employees like they are ignorant naughty children. Very disorganized to say the least, getting worse all the time. Add to it the fact that politicians tell the USPS what they can and cannot do, and feel free to dip into postal retirement funds, the outlook is not good. The work itself can be quite demanding physically and mentally, but with the right manager it is a great job--with the wrong manager it is hell. Unfortunately, not many good ones left...
