Pros

Jack Potter (PMG/CEO), compensation, benefits, job security, dedicated workforce, and for some, interesting work. With around 700K or so employees, there are a wide variety of jobs and opportunities nationwide.

Cons

One day you are government, one day you are not. You may find inconsistent and/or ineffective management, an entitlement mentality with some employees, and a lack of effective work/life balance programs (little flexibility in programs if they exist and when designed). To be fair, some of these issues may be attributable to the organization's size, its many sub-cultures and the variety of jobs and employees (both union and non-union). In some geographical areas the USPS lags behind other federal agency compensation and benefit packages. In turn this makes recruitment and retention challenging in many areas. The organization is facing big losses, which means reduced budgets, staffing, and ultimately, for those that are there, they must do more with less. This type of challenge may invigorate some, yet it may turn others off. If you have the right stuff, the USPS can provide a challenging and interesting career path.
