Pros

Great benefits, and great co workers. At the beginning started out like a google environment.

Cons

Simply put. Great place to work if the managers were not so political. I was originally hired for one position and after a month they removed that position and I became a floater. After 8 months of trying to find work they finally put me on a team just to find a reason to let me go shortly after. Not due to work performance, but how I present myself during work hours to other employees. Even though I was the go to person for help which was part of the reason I was let go. Do not work here if you a collaborative person who likes to help others and push yourself to be a cultural and community leader. Interacting with other people looks bad here. I love front end development. At USAA there is no real such thing. You are either a front end developer required to learn java, or your a back end developer forced to learn front end. Either way your not in your own role. You are not able to grow as the technologies are antiquated, or they use their own home grown versions of open source, or even in house products that no one else uses. Very Limited place to work I started out making 150000 as a contract worker then I had to take an over a third pay cut that hurt a lot. They tried to say their benefits made up the difference but even adding it all up it was not even close to what I was making. I do not suggest going full time. It is not worth it. They seem to have an awesome culture till you work there for a while. Yes the plano campus has a billards table, shuffle board, ping pong, free soda, xbox one, and a few other things. Would be nice except it is very limited use and any time on their has to be made up. I was even told I was not allowed to use them, except for the free soft drinks, which makes up for a lot. They also dictate who you are allowed to speak with and when, even when your work is done and you have literately zero work to do(including side work that you have picked up for the company like innovation products) You can win several awards within a short amount of time, but that doesn't matter. What matters is showing up by ten, then by nine thirty, then nine, then be at your desk by nine, then, be in before nine, then be productive and at your desk by nine. Really? Make your minds on how early you want us in. It changed so much in a year from google like to financial bank. Simple way to survive in the company. Do not do anything related to the culture, sit at your desk unless you go to lunch or use the bathroom, and even then, you might just want to hold it in. Do not help anyone else, do not talk to other people even if it is about work. Just use the IM, and Emails. Do not do anything extra for the company, unless it is not during work hours, even if it is to help another team meet their goals.

Pros

Good Benefits,Great Cafe on site,Fitness Center, and safe environment.

Cons

This place is micromanagement to the extreme. It was AWFUL. Don't get off the phone to go to the bathroom unless it's scheduled! Your calls are monitored, your breaks are monitored, you have to sit and review calls periodically with your manager and if you were lucky to have the crazy woman who was my manager....Oh boy good luck. This company was not a good company to work for. How about this manager calls me up the DAY BEFORE I have my baby and FIRES me? ON THE SPOT I lose my benefits and everything and she KNEW I was delivering the next day. If you want a company that throws you out like that then go ahead.

Pros

Serves the armed forces and their families. There are some excellent people working there who are the backbone of the company.

Cons

The excellent employees who are the backbone of USAA are growing weary of micromanagement, the large influx of new hires who are not receiving proper training, and the lost opportunities for career advancement due to outsiders who come on board through the good 'ole boy network. At USAA an internal employee will not be considered for promotion unless they are labeled as an employee who "exceeds expectations" in their annual performance review. Yet, new hires can be easily brought in for a job they're not qualified to do simply because they've networked themselves into the job. The really sad part about that is USAA promotes a performance management philosophy that fails to use SMART goals even though the use of SMART GOALS are stressed as being imperative in their management training classes. I believe USAA is quickly losing the reputation that took over 90 years to build by rapidly turning into another run of the mill financial services company. This is because of a desire to grow its customer base too quickly and failing to manage its infrastructure properly. In other words, they are currently in a strong growth mode with new members coming on board in record numbers yet the management structure is stuck in the '50's and refuses to allow employees to have the appropriate authority to act in accordance with responsibilities assigned to employees.
