Pros
There is interesting work to do at US Cellular, I was in the data warehousing area. They are an Oracle & Informatica shop. It's a developer friendly place, and at some point soon they will be moving towards Hadoop. Friendly people and management, good central location away from downtown. For employees, they do take employee culture surveys seriously, and management seems to be trying to improve the overall corporate culture. They certainly are not aggressive or or intimidating management from my experience, and seem like fairly decent people.
Cons
I think that the worst position to be in at USC is either a project manager or IT manager. They do not seem to have the necessary authority to motivate their reports, but often managers are fired after missed deadlines. (There are many). DBAs also work long hours. My impression is the employees paid barely at industry rates, whereas contractors do a bit better. Also, the business overall is getting crushed by their competitors like ATT and Verizon.
