Pros

Associate phone program, flexibility, casual dress code.

Cons

The Dynamic Organization is used as an entitlement ploy for employees to get what they want, regardless if it's what's best for the company. Decisions are made by members of management that have limited direct experience or do not want to rock the boat.

Pros

Free Cell Phone for Employees, Benefits on par with industry, Average Pay

Cons

My short experience with this organization was strange. If I had not experienced it for myself, I would not have believed it. I read all the posts about USC before I accepted a position with them and assumed all of the posts were likely disgruntled (ex) employees. I couldn't have been more wrong. After a couple of weeks, a few people were "no longer with the organization." Nothing more was said and it was as though they never existed. There is a steady stream of meetings and conference calls daily where the topic of conversation is the "DO" and the behaviors - Common Purpose, Flexibility, and Values - Customer Focus, Empowerment, Diversity. Let me translate a few - Flexibility - this means you must work any time you are asked, take on extra projects or special assignments regardless of how much work you currently have or you are not being "flexible" or working towards the "common purpose." Recognition is important. "I want to thank XYZ for showing "common purpose.", I want to thank XYZ for her "flexibility" I want to recognize XYZ for "embracing change."This is important to show that you are a "good fit with the DO culture." Leaders are encouraged to use the same language for consistency and sending the same message. This is where and why people liken this organization to a religious cult, as you are constantly being bombarded with their ideology. Meanwhile, actual WORK is secondary to all things "culture" related. As a New Hire, don't ask a lot of questions.. Like, why do we do this, in this way? Wouldn't it be more efficient if we.., or have we tried to .." This is not welcome. Verbally you will hear that USC wants to hear differing opinions and ideas as we all have varied backgrounds and experience. Don't fall into the same trap that I fell into and actually believe that. Another word you will hear often is "feedback." What this translates to - your boss will reach out to people that you work with to find out what they think of you. Like a normal person, you will probably not see this as an issue. After all, you stand by your work and welcome constructive criticism. Right? Casual conversations with peers are taken out of context. Everyone (associates and leaders) are encouraged to "tattle" on each other. This is especially true of New Hires as they are still trying to determine if you will fit in with the culture. So what normal people would consider casual conversation or simply venting frustrations to a peer, or questioning the reasoning behind a decision, is viewed as negative and generally not accepted. Conference calls and meetings quickly eat up half your day - it is not uncommon to have 3-5 conference calls back to back. Yes, there is work to be done and yes, there are deadlines, but you can always take it home or do it during the weekend. So work/life balance? A figment of someone's overactive imagination. As a professional, it is no mystery that USC is a not a "big player" in the wireless arena. I highly doubt it will ever be. After all, while other carriers are busy (GASP) working, innovating, and growing, USC is sadly on a conference call talking about how wonderful it is to work for such a truly dynamic organization. I went in believing that perhaps there was something truly special about all of the smiling faces and employees who loved working at USC. Don't fall for the hype; employees must appear this way to keep their job. They are absolutely motivated by fear and will not say anything to you because after all, you might "report" them. An offer with this organization is simply an opportunity to "see if you will be a good fit" with the DO and if you are found wanting, as I was, you will be terminated. Many told me to "drink the kool aid" and just "fake" it and I would be left alone. Frankly, I don't like kool aid and I won't drink it. If you are "open to change" into their version of a drone, with little time for family, long hours, lots of travel, average pay - choose US Cellular. If you have other options - Take them. This experience was a stressful one and was straight out of the pages of the "The Twilight Zone."

Pros

College student looking to get by great place to work

Cons

I have been with the company for 4 years and the company has seen a lot of change. The leadership blame being not accepting to change on the "negative" attitudes of older associates. Change is how the industry works no doubt. Fast pace technology and change is why I started there! Bottom line. They are a small company trying to fight with larger companies and are always trying to keep there head above water. So consolidation is done. They eliminated a department of business reps leaving business sales calls and business customers to Retail Wireless consultants. Mind you this is a great "opportunity" to make lots of money!"money in your pocket " is a coin phrase they use very liberally and inaccurately.Mind you those business take LOTS of time and are very needy. So hours invested in to cold calls, setting up plans following up and setting up and for the next few months being their "contact". Just sales right? Don't forget you have 60 "SMB" calls you have to make a month, plus a separate call list for existing customers which is only about 15-30 calls a month not too bad but in your 8 hour shift you must also complete you 4-6 trainings a month. Oh yea.. don't forget about the 14 customers waiting on a list yelling on the phone to customer service as they wait due to them being upset. On top of that you are not JUST a sales person due to consolidation you also are a technician, greeter, and sales manager. Mind you as well due to smart phone and market saturation they are continually trying to re invent the wheel and are in the process of doing something a different way each month sometimes each week. AND sale to tech ratio is about 1 sale : 10 tech issues. Us cellular has a HUGE loyal customer base but has tanked and unable to keep more customers than gained in the last 7 quarters. It used to be a diverse unique company to work for now it is strictly big business. There are lots of articles about the company such as in Bloomingburg from July 2012. They don't value their associate like they used to, they will hire someone who doesn't know any different for less, until they have been there for 2 years and pay is decrease by thousands! By what they call, "Commission structure" they changes with the needs of the business. If you're making less it's simply because "you are not doing all you can !" I will give them props for still having our annual culture survey to share associate opinions about the company ect. but they did change the questions so that they are no longer asking the "tough" questions. I will bet that will also disappear in the next few years to due to cost. Try explaining to a customer who has a broken warranty phone that has been with the company from 1994 that they have to pay $35 to have a replacement shipped, or they have the option to upgrade but have to also pay $30 to do that plus cost of phone, mail in a rebate that is only there because they hope you forget about it to make more money off of you, and then reduced you trial period from 30 days to 15. Limit you battery swaps 4 times a month to 4 times a year. If you ask your manager a question good luck getting a strait answer it is just as bad a politics. You will get a run a round and leave the conversation not even remembering what you asked in the first place. Oh by the way we call that "giving the D.O" which the D.O stood for Dynamic Organization which USED to mean something, but now does not by any means. Once that left the company tanked! WORK life balance DOES NOT EXIST!!! Always short staffed. NO vacation after November 15th. They do tell you they schedule for the needs of the business, rightfully so but when you close at night (at 9:00 pm) you usually won't leave until 10:00 I have even had to stay till 11:00- 11:30 HELPING CUSTOMERS!!! Mind you I have been with the company for 4 years and am making 11.87/ hr plus commission my commission check was a whole $787.00 before taxes and I had averaged 35/38 hrs a week and I AM PART TIME!!! Think about this job carefully if you are looking for a career here or have a family!
