Pros
Working for an elected official means that he/she is only accountable to the voters. This removes a lot of red tape as compared to working for a municipality where the Chief is accountable to a city manager, and/or city board or council.
Cons
We cover an area of 3200 square miles with only 20 patrol deputies. We don't have backup as readily available as I sometimes wish we could, and our response times to the far reaches of the county can be slow simply due to distance.
