UncommonGoods Really Does Good!

Pros

I started at UG as an intern, and then was asked to stay on full-time. From my initial interview process to my final day on the team, everyone I came in contact with was genuinely kind, helpful and easy to be around. The company really does care about using their business as a force for good, and is starting to make those long-entrenched beliefs even more public, which I think is great. I never felt uncomfortable talking about any concerns with my manager, and I think that transparency really travels all the way upward at UG. The company has a bit of a start-up feel even though it's well established. Everyone pitches in where they're needed, especially during the super busy holiday season. UG works hard to establish a culture that feels fun and welcoming. There are monthly themed company lunches and snacks, and plenty of clubs you can join by interest to get to know your coworkers better.

Cons

The location is not ideal. The nearest subway is about a ten minute walk. The office itself isn't gorgeous, butttt, they're in the middle of renovations and it looks like there will be a major improvement within the next several months.

Anonymous former team member, It was great having you here and watching you grow (while writing some of the best darn gift guides I've ever feasted my eyes on!). I look forward to seeing you continue to be a force for good outside of our proverbial gates and please keep in touch! All the best to you and your aspirations, Sean P.S.- If that walk took you longer than 8.95 minutes, you were doing it wrong!

Thank you for sharing your feedback, although I am sorry to hear that’s how you feel. Our leadership team takes a lot of pride in developing our team and giving them opportunities to grow here at UncommonGoods. Because of that, we have a lot of managers who started out as seasonal team members and have grown into their current management roles. We see that as being a really great thing for many reasons. We recognize that our management team has opportunities to improve (as does any management team) and in 2017 we’re going to put more emphasis on developing our leaders. We always hate to see a great manager leave but we make it a point to part ways kindly. As the head of HR, I can tell you that I'm not aware of any managers who have been asked to leave the company since I've been here. If you have more information to share about your specific concerns, we would really like to hear it. Please come by the HR office or email HR@uncommongoods.com and someone will reach out to you. Thanks again for giving us an opportunity to hear your feedback.
