Pros

It completely depends on the department you work in. In general, you can clock in eight hours and go, if you work in HQ. Some people complain that they work constant overtime and are forced to work Saturdays. My advice to them: change departments! Yeah, there are tyrants, but that's not generally true. The starting pay is really good, but don't expect any increases unless you get a promotion. Some departments give really good bonuses to managers, but that's not widely true. The retirement benefits are outstanding if you can last thirty years. Unfortunately, this creates a mentality of screwing older workers because they can't leave. Anyone who has been there 15+ years is terrified of being fired. Office workers really have to screw up to get fired, though. Field managers can get fired for just about any reason.

Cons

Where I work in IT, it's like a communist country: You can do a good job or a bad job, neither matters. You can goof off six hours out of eight, and no one will know. There were times I went for six months with no work assigned! If you like being lazy and don't like being punished, it's great. Now, that's not true of all departments, for certain. No one leaves the company, so they get fat, lazy, and out of date. The company invests nothing in training or in their workers. They say how much they care, but do nothing to back it up. Now the company is outsourcing everything they can to India just to save money. The quality of the work we're seeing is horrid, but management doesn't care. We're going to be seeing lots of re-work over the next few years. I and others have the impression that to Lyndon Tennison (CIO), a worker is fungible, an interchangeable part, nothing more. I'm currently looking for a new employer because I am tired of my skills degenerating and of being treated like everyone else, no matter my efforts.
