Pros

Personally, the pension. When you are in the railroad, you are locked into a very solid and stable employment field. Alot of positions allow you to have freedom and because of this freedom you are able to repair/do your job without much trouble from outside. The downside is the company does not have much in standardization and things are different all over the railroad. Compensation is good and most shops are Union. Management is pretty easy to get along with most times and getting your tools and equipment is alot of the time done on the fly with a credit card.

Cons

Change is something that the rail is not used to, so change is something that is not looked upon favorably, still the mentality, if it is not broke, do not fix it.

Pros

There are good training classes; however, they are usually limited to select managers. Having experience with a Fortune 200 company on a resume is fantastic. Learning positive and negative management and leadership skills from different supervisors is a bonus. Learn how to work in cross-functional teams and manage projects. Get involved in company sponsored groups and community service projects. Exposure to a wide variety of people gives opportunity to determine what is really important for career and personal life. If you are a good brown-noser or are willing to sell your integrity & self-respect, and screw over you coworkers, you can be very successful in title, salary and bonus.

Cons

The way employees are treated and many times it is covered up. The company talks up EEO and harrassment in the work place, but will sweep as much under the rug as possible so the problems continue. Management (not executives) health insurance was cut drastically and now deductibles are thousands of dollars. The execs have a superficial customer focus and only worry about a bonus. If meeting a deadline ensures a bonus the deadline will be met, even if the project is not ready. Other systems will be shut off for a new one that is not yet working, just because the bonus is the priority.
