Pros

Pay is pretty good when the work is there. The retirement is some of the best around if you make it that far.

Cons

Most managers are useless. They bring them in from college with experience with the railroad industry. Employees are treated as a number. Company regularly disregards the union contracts. I've relised in the first year that going above and beyond to help will either go unnoticed or get you fired. MOP's are the rule police. If you blink funny your liable to be put on a discipline level. Manager promotions seem to be based on ftx failures not actually how well you do your job. You won't leave a coaching without some kind of ftx coaching no matter if you broke the rules of not.

Pros

Good pay and benefits but...

Cons

No loyalty, will fire you if you fart wrong, will go out of their way to fire you- seriously, No loyalty and honesty to employees, treats employees as just a number not a human- I recently was furloughed (thats fine I understand business) and applied for a transfer they were offering, within 3 weeks of being furloughed I was offered the position and jumped through all the pre-employment hoops(even though I was already an employee) Immediately got a start date for training (Nov. 30th) ...1 week later we were told the start date was to be postponed for "various reasons" and we would soon hear back. Every 2 weeks I called to get an update and was told we would for sure know something after the holiday season. So a week went by after the 1st of the year and we finally got an email saying that we would get a start date within two weeks. Yet again two weeks went by and no answers, so I called again and was told what I began to expect, "we have no idea when you guys are going to start but it should be soon". This whole time I've been unemployed mind you but have been told I have a job with UP still, so it made zero sense for me to go look for other employment only to tell them a week later that I was leaving back for the Railroad again.... Fast forward to today February 5th. I got a call and was told that we were in fact not going to start any time soon and that it has been pushed back to MAY OR JUNE! (riiiiight) I understand if business is in the slumps and you have to cancel some new hires, but you don't drag them through mud and lead them on for 2 months! At least have the respect and tell them early enough so your're not wasting their time. This company is a joke and only cares about the bottom line. The pay and benefits are good but there are plenty of other places that don't treat their employees like dog crap. This is the only company that will spend $100,000 to hire and train you and then fire you at the drop of the hat.

Pros

UP used to be a great company to work for It invests in employee training Decent benefits Promote worker's safety

Cons

The current leadership lacks any vision. It slashed hundreds of jobs because it cannot seem to adjust to changing market conditions. It furloughed a lot of people, and it felt more like a firing. Current CEO should be dismissed, because in 2009 when the economy tanked, UP was hiring under the now retired CEO Koralesky. Now, when the economy is booming, UP is closing shops and doing massive layoffs.
